Bye Bye Chinatown started as a photo exhibition about the gentrification of one of the world’s largest and most authentic Chinatowns. We translated the topic of the exhibition into a community-based walking tour to dive right into the heart and DNA of what is known as Sampeng and Yaowarat. Learn about the unique and vital part of the Thai-Chinese history, the city’s success story and the challenges to balance progress and conservation. We provide a hands-on experience in collaboration with the Charoen Chai Community, Thailand’s last remaining Joss paper trading community. With the coming of the new subway communities such as Chaoren Chai are threatened as developers and government are zeroing in on this historically unique part of the city. We hope that by developing and supporting cultural tourism initiatives the decisions on the future of Bangkok’s historic areas will shift in favor of preserving their rich cultural heritage.
