Six Bangladeshi students received scholarships for pursuing graduate and postgraduate programs at foreign universities under the Khazanah Scholarship Program facilitated by Yunus Centre this year. The assessments for Khazanah Scholarship Program were held from January 23 to January 26, 2017 in Bangladesh. After several rigorous screening phases, 18 candidates made it to the final. From the finalist, 6 students managed the attractive scholarships.
Every year Yayasan Khazanah Foundation, Malaysia in collaboration with Khazanah Nasional's partner and investee companies, offers scholarships to deserving candidates from Bangladesh, Indonesia and Palestine to pursue their undergraduate and postgraduate education at selected leading universities in Malaysia and beyond. Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus proposed to the CEO of Khazanah to offer these scholarships to Bangladeshi students in 2008. He agreed and since then this scholarship is given every year facilitated by Yunus Centre.
Yunus Centre liaises with top universities and schools in Bangladesh for the candidate selection and also receives nomination from Grameen Bank and Grameen Shikkha on potential candidates for the scholarship award. The children of Grameen Bank members get the opportunity to pursue undergraduate degrees at different prestigious universities in Malaysia while candidates of all background are offered postgraduate scholarships.
Khazanah Asia Scholarship Program was established in 2007 after Professor Yunus delivered the Khazanah Global Lecture at the Khazanah Foundation. The Foundation has awarded a good number of scholarships to the children of Grameen families under this program starting in 2009. Khazanah, in association with Yunus Centre selected 6 candidates from Bangladesh last year under the same program. So far, around 40 students have received the scholarship from Bangladesh through Yunus Centre since 2009.
